What is a New Years Resolution & Why Bother in 2018

Spread the love

Making resolutions because it is a new year is something many people do. But, why do we bother with them. Why take the time to worry about what would be the best resolution to make in 2018.

New Year resolutions are usually made at the very beginning of January, but it’s not too late to make them now. If you are wondering whether you will benefit from resolving to do certain activities throughout the year, the following provides some food for thought.

Let’s Look at What is a New Years Resolution Exactly

How did the idea start in the first place?

From what I have been able to find, the practice of making resolutions for a New Year started way back in 153 BC and was entwined with the Roman God Janus, a God of Before and After. I have little knowledge of that era but you can learn more about it on the internet.

In more modern times, the practice of New Year’s resolutions has continued. Therefore, I see these resolutions as something that makes people feel good. Perhaps New Year resolutions have been instilled by forebears and are continued year after year, more or less as a ritual.

With continual practice and effort, those who are serious about what they resolved to do in a new year, actually achieve. Consequently, satisfactory and maybe fantastic results are enjoyed.

Although I’m not the absolute best at keeping New Year resolutions, I’m aware many people are very successful with their resolutions. Their success comes from being serious about what they wish to achieve.

However, to be successful with any resolution there has to be a sound purpose. Why make a resolution if the intention is to just ‘see how it goes’. That’s not the best approach, I’m sure you will agree!

So, What is the Purpose of New Year Resolutions

Stop to think about how things went for you in 2017 or even prior to then. Maybe, similar to thousands of people you wanted to change your life to be more like your friends or colleagues. I’m sure you know what I mean. You don’t want to be a copycat and do exactly what others do, but you live in hope of enjoying fun, good health and finance as they appear to have. The problem is that ‘hope’ on its own seldom brings great results within a reasonable time frame.

wishing new year to be better than previous yearThere are every day things people struggle with, such as:

  • Finding time to complete daily tasks
  • Constantly wishing they could change their job
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Saving money for overseas travel
  • Looking for a happier way of getting through each day

There could be many more issues people deal with daily. Because of this, it is a natural occurrence as a year comes to a close, to make resolutions for the New Year. For some unknown reason, a New Year sounds appealing. No doubt, it is about new beginnings. Expectation is a New Year will be a time when life will be better than the previous year. But is that so! Will the arrival of a New Year bring great things into our lives. That is a debatable question.

I personally would debate that great things can come from setting New Year resolutions. The reason being that I agree with Henry Ford’s quote: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.”

We are each blessed with one powerful mind and if we set our thoughts on positivity we will succeed at anything we choose to do.

But, if our thoughts are that something will be or could be too hard, then in line with Henry Ford’s quotation, that’s just what it will be. Too hard!

Don’t let that be you. If you’ve made a New Year resolution, or still intend to do so, then go with it. Use positive thinking and put all you have into the goals that will make the resolution happen.

It’s a fact that so many people talk about their New Year resolutions, and how those resolutions helped them to change their lives. So why not go for it, and make changes to better your life in 2018.

Now, the question is:

How Will You Achieve Your New Year Resolutions?

making new year resolutions wordIt may be that at the commencement of 2018 you made your New Year resolution. If not, it is preferable to do that now before moving too far into January.

Whatever you’ve resolved to change in 2018 you will need to set a plan to help you achieve your dreams. Your plan will need to include goals and time frames. Sticking with your plan and meeting time frames will have a great effect on your success with the changes you have resolved to make.

Sheer determination will help you to change your life for the better. Successful people are those who make a firm decision to achieve their desires. These people do not listen to nay sayers. They do not let negativity of any sort interfere with their path to success.

We are living in very competitive times. In spite of the competitiveness, you can choose to go with anything you wish to do. The most important thing is recognizing your own talents and choosing a suitable path that will provide opportunities.

In the event of your New Year resolution being about increasing your income, I invite you to take a look at my review of Wealthy Affiliate. This is a program I follow along with almost 100,000 other people. These people have either reached their desired level of income, or are learning skills to start their own business working from home.

It will cost you nothing other than your time to read the Review. If you see anything in it that interests you, that would be great. Otherwise, no harm done. At least you will have learned something new that may provide food for thought.

I wish you a wonderful year in 2018. May your year be one of moving forward with success.

    • Absolutely Brendon.  It’s all in our mind.  We can succeed at any time of the year if set ourselves up to do so.  We don’t need a special season to enable us to progress.

  4. H there,

I found the Wealthy Affiliate review to be very interesting and am looking of ways that I can expand with affiliate marketing. I would describe myself as a newbie fast moving on to intermediate as I have been doing online marketing research for 10 years.

I understand a lot of the jargon, but was always afraid to build a website just in case I made a mes of it.

I agree with you that Wealthy Affiliate is worth joining. It is very good for the price you pay compared to other affiliate programs.

    • Hi Stella, thank you for commenting on my Wealthy Affiliate review.  There are very many ways to expand an affiliate marketing business, and trying different methods is the way we learn.

I definitely recommend you build your own website as there is nothing to fear about doing that. If you make mistakes you will learn by them.  On the other hand, there is so much help and great training at Wealthy Affiliate  it’s unlikely you would go wrong with building a website.

  5. I enjoyed reading this Valerie. I am not one for keeping New Years resolutions, they are usually broken within the first month but it is always good to try and as you say it does make you feel good, just putting them down on paper. This morning I read Zig Ziglars story and found that to be very inspiring. As you said quoting Henry Ford, “whether you think you can or think you can’t , you’re right. It is a mind set, how we think determines how we act and live and whether or not we are able to keep those New Years resolutions.

    • Judy, thanks so much for your comment. It seems we are both of a similar mind about New Year resolutions, but I admire those who do set themselves a challenge and succeed.

I haven’t read Zig Ziglar’s story but will make a point of doing so. No doubt I can find Zig Ziglar by doing a Google search. The more knowledge we gain from those who are successful the more we can help ourselves, as well as helping others.

    • Thanks Alec for leaving your comment.  I’m pleased to know you found the post inspirational.  I had no idea either about how New Years resolutions started.  Just as well we’ve got Google to rely on when we are seeking answers to things that eventuated centuries ago.
